bicentennial independence celebrations

We are with our national holiday on the verge, which means that we began to hear seguidito cuecas and Chilean music on the radio ... I've been through here a couple of weeks listening to rhythms from all over Chile and several times a day anthem. It is because there is next to a kindergarten and aunts are careful to prepare the event to show to parents to thank for their young.

began dieciocheras bids for days, some old-fashioned taken cared of ad hoc and others were looking for "costumes" to comply with orders of gardens and schools to the familiar school holiday.

Today in Workplaces miss pie and a glass of wine to start the celebration but I know that yesterday and left early.

To go arming the environment, and traditional surveys were made: whether still Stylish bonuses or were replaced by "the box with merchandise, where to go to celebrate, or where to find the best pies.

not so much to paint the walls of their houses to wait on 18, which was once a regular ritual. These weeks in the fields heard that several women, changed the paint the front to do a deep cleaning to get on 18 to win.

already smell the barbecue smoke, binge pies, kebabs, choripanes, pebre, chicha, pīpene, wine and demases. Agglomerations in the inns and all the typical things of national holidays. So if this year is "special" because we approach the bicentennial and thus it is likely that the Chilean last us an entire year!. Party mass rally in Alameda in a few hours and the provinces each will have its own.

Have you read about the phenomenon called the Cueca Brava? Well I think the revival of taste for dancing cuecas among city dwellers, there are some fun places to enjoy it all year.

several days I've been thinking about this Chilean food, holidays and the Bicentennial of course many more are on the same page and for more time ...

In keeping with the date, broadcast second season premiere of the documentary series "I recommend Chile: Knowledge and flavors of our country "; notable initiative in which Chef of Les Toques Blanches, the Chilean Chapter-embark for the second time. And in case anyone was not aware, this is an initiative of the foundation of the same name that takes seven years working, among its original goals is the highlight and assess the role of rural women, stressing their ancestral contribution to the care of the seeds culinary art, the value of their crops, gathering their knowledge and rural culture. They made several years a number of important activities to recover and put on record the intangible heritage through food, it is actually more than that but stay in my ink for now.

Returning to popular festivals, each city and people of Chile should could you be getting ready "to take off the gloves" and shining shoes to dance the corresponding legs of cueca in the bottom of each locality to more than one touch you dance the cueca longer than I have known, that of 19 (with the balance to swing ....)

Until today he had not had time to sit feed this space, but let's get, and this blog is to bring something more to the rescue of Chilean food and drinks. Last year some traditional recipes can check these dates in
cook up: Blog dieciochero.

This year we will add to the list a patriotic dessert and some drinks Chileans were the result of a collective processing list, which seemed appropriate to share now.

Dulce Patria

This is a dessert and is described as egg mol at its best, have to have more than one hundred years, created by Juanita Basaure working for the family of Eusebio Lillo-the same as our national anthem.

I could read, was the grandson of Don Eusebio, who said he returned from a trip, his grandfather said at a lunch a delicious dessert that was eaten. The desserts were his weakness and believed that Chileans were "tasty but rough", that inspired Mrs. Juanita who made the dessert following what he heard while serving the table, the result was good, but did not look like the original.

Later

family moved to Europe for a year and carrying Juanita, who admitted to a school outside Paris to perfect gourmet pastries. Completed the course, she is received with highest honors and invents a dessert she called "Sweet Country", after the national anthem.

gastronomic chronicler Ruperto de Nola, describes it as "dessert This is a very good, very in the vein of many other creams that are used in Chile in the late nineteenth century, and, at bottom, is not more than a "custard" or "custard" flavored with almonds "...

carafe or Damajuana
More Drinks Chilean
To contextualize, I have some time to participate in an entertaining site dedicated to sharing information and thoughts on places to eat and drink, in that who comment are ordinary citizens like everyone else, I refer to The Good Life or LBV.
In this space I said a few drinks once Chilean and requested that those who wanted to help others register to leave, it was an interesting exercise in collective memory and many contributions came.

Here I leave some of them, The Carambela, The jesses and The Chupilca. The punch of sea urchins.

La Paloma (Anise with ore). Juanito
To (pisco sour with sprite).
Paco sock, beer and mint.
Pink Panther, Pisco, Fanta and condensed milk. The old men were also taking liquor with little water to culen (our equivalent to the pap) in the years 40-50. Do not know if that name was.
124 ... 120 + Drink White Wine .. Quatro (Should come with a zolben tb pa cane according to the data).

The Canarito , a contribution that came with incredible video included, which "takes" white wine, eggs and cinnamon and sugar. (I recommend watching the video).
not forget the legendary Mai Tai cana: the Green Bird. Grab turpentine, varnish or other, put lemon juice ... wait a couple of days to be "cut off" (separating the solvent from the rest) and drink ... While another of the guests remembered for the same drink recipe: Cologne bus, fermented bread, fruit peels, and ironically comments that it is a delicacy.

Other suggestions were on the side, Pisco Kem Piña nothing more cool for a summer afternoon.

There is also the "Bayleys Criollo" Pisco pudding with caramel ice creams it is served with ice obviously.

Another fact of the Pink Panther he had heard other diners from LGW, which was pisco with red wine ...

The simplest of all the Penguin , ice water and one night unnamed reel, pisco with supreme will (according to him, weno weno at 4 in the morning).

One was half chamullento believe the Barro Barroso whose ingredients were beer with cola, allegedly ingested in Rancagua.

Pisco + tonic + lime slice = Piston , creation of which gave the data and says it is for when you reach the silver pa a good vodka, good pisco better than a vodka malena. Although it is so simple that no doubt there is, but I have not seen. If you have seen in a bar, asks to warn you collect p'a rights.

Another contribution for when you want to take something very strong, or when the bartender is not very skillful, the amaretto and tonic (like vodka tonic) I guess the vanilla vodka should be good too:) so removes the excess bitter sweet:)

Chicharron , Chicha grape with rum This creation is a day for a week of national holidays, horn playing cards at home and who recommends it. He says no shortage of diners confused Chub vessels with wine ...

Gloria or of glory, for the funeral and cold before bed: burnt sugar, lemon peel, a measure (generous) of brandy, has recently been replaced by pisco, but not the same. Fill with boiling water.
For colds, take two aspirins and breathable prepare for everything.

guess the wine sailed if you know all: cloves, cinnamon and sugar ....

picorocos Punch: For a blender jar 1.5 lts. 6 picorocos cook, crumble and put into the jar, to which is added one liter of white wine previously cooled in the refrigerator, short of brandy and sugar to taste, creams and is served sprinkled with cinnamon .... punch stains will be for another time. La Araucana and Quixote

One of the works that the avid readers of the Quijote remembered for having saved the "From the diverting and important scrutiny which the curate and the barber made in the library of our ingenious gentleman" was La Araucana

Editing La Araucana

Now, one might wonder why Cervantes chose to save this piece of burning. Needless to say, the Araucana is still the greatest epic poem written about the Castilian conquest of America. So our author, an expert on the epic and chivalric literature of his time, he would not have overlooked the quality of the text of Ercilla, and therefore it is saved from burning along with other works such as " The Austriada " of Juan Rufo and " The Montserrat "Christopher of Virués of the famous scrutiny of books, would not result in anything strange. This Cervantes wanted to let you understand about the same:

"All three books," said the priest are the best in heroic verse English language they are written, and can compete with the most famous in Italy, beware with the richest treasures of poetry that Spain possesses. "

That said, before going on to find the connections between the work of Don Quixote and the Araucana, we briefly review the work of Ercilla.

- La Araucana -

  • Its author to write
Araucana by Alonso de Ercilla (1533-1594) was a soldier and Source proud Castilian poet of Biscay. His father, Don Fortun Ercilla and Arteaga was a member of the Council of Castile and Knight of the Order of Santiago, as your child. His mother, Dona Leonor de Zuniga, Alonso was widowed when she was a year old, being somewhat offset by the loss of her husband with the appointment, shortly after, guardadamas of Empress Elizabeth. This appointment was lucky Ercilla soon get used to the life and manners of the court.

Alonso de Ercilla Ercilla

soon entered the service of Prince Philip as a page, study the art of letters and of arms, whose offices exercised with care. At fifteen he went to Castile and was a regular receptions and processions of illustrious. So much so that when Philip left to England to marry the Queen Mary Tudor England in 1554 he accompanied him.

Don Alonso de Ercilla had twenty-one years old when he decided to leave Chile with the newly appointed governor Jerome Alderete and who marched to quell a dangerous indigenous rebellion in which, the former governor of the region, Pedro de Valdivia , had been killed bloodily. There

experienced first hand the tactics of indigenous Araucanian war, to which it had to fight so hard war and gave the settlers for centuries.

After the end of the war was for of 1558 or beginning of 59 returned to Peru where the author tells us, will join an expedition whose mission was to capture the traitor Aguirre 1561. Completed his adventures in America and as Ercilla never showed interest in becoming a landowner encomendero or eventually returned to Spain in 1563 it now has twenty-nine.

On his return he continued to serve Philip II in a series of journeys that took him to Flanders, Austria, England and Italy until he finally decided to give instructions to the series of ideas he had in old sheets on the events before and during his stay in Chile. Six years

therefore passed since Ercilla returned from America and finally decided to publish the first part of which would be one of the greatest works of modern English epic.

  • La Araucana
La Araucana is divided into three parts and thirty-seven songs in total published in 1569, 1578 and 1589 respectively. The book tells the English conquest of the Araucanian lands within Chile; chronological develops from the government of Pedro de Valdivia and the great rebellion of Arauco produced around 1553 to the first defeat of the Indians by the hand of Don García Hurtado de Mendoza .

- In the first part (Cantos I-XV) tells the rebellion of the Arauca and the series of defeats the English experience, culminating in the death of the governor referred to above. Among the most outstanding character of this part Lautaro undoubtedly the most famous, the defeat of this in Canto XIV and their colleagues in the XV with the expected arrival of Ercilla closed the first half.

Lautaro idealized image

- In the second part (Cantos XVI-XXIX) Ercilla comes into play, as previously narrated the events before the author arrived in Chile, would stress here that Ercilla armed interventions, the victory of the Castilian countryside will be fed frequently. Notable songs dedicated to the battle of San Quintin and Lepanto. the intention of Alonso de Ercilla to include a description of these battles was the war fought match at the end of the world with the great victories of the empire of Philip II.

- Part III (songs XXX-XXXVII) is the shortest of the work and where the exaltation of the empire is more evident among the more interesting we can find the capture and execution of Chief Caupolican , Lautaro successor; and a final examination of the English to the island of Chiloé . In the last chapter of the poem justifying the rights to the throne of Portugal Philip II.

La Araucana comes at times to show the epic moments of great content, an example is the duel of two great champions (Rengo and Andrea) fought in the last battle of the first part.

the same way the fierce Andrea,
surrounded by the barbarians came,
but so is surrounded,
much open road with the sword;
boil grows, the shouting match,
While most people went, behold
Rengo also bloody
arriving at that time on that side
And
surrounded by two mastiffs mutt
of importunate that in coming
to be seen with the bristling hills,
will scold each other, and the two warriors
identified, raising
the inhumane weapons,
are being hurt, but the combat
another song I want to dilate.

We also have other powerful and emotional moments such as the execution of the successor of Lautaro: Caupolican warlord, who died impaled

That said, and lifted his right foot,
but prevented chain, gave
just coz the executioner, who threw
long way rolling down wounded;
reproved the impatient fact
and reduced sudden anger, she sat
then
little help on the tip of the sharp stake. Not

stick sharpened penetrating
guts even though you broke
auger body was quite
to severe pain surrender;
that term and serene countenance,
without lip or eyebrow writhe, quiet

was the way that if he was struck in the thalamus.

Another notable feature of the work is the constant reference to Greco-Latin references such as muses and gods, an example is the CantoXVII when Bellona, \u200b\u200bthe Roman goddess of war, it appears Ercilla in his sleep to show the battle of San Quintin .

soon as the sweet sleep and rest
broken body was left,
when, hearing a noise sound,
that shake the earth seemed
with angry gesture word haughty
before I became a woman,
then saw his size and great person
be robust and rough Bellona

Dressed feet to the waist, the waist
the warhead
a lucid scaly armor, its
shield to the arm, next to the broad sword brandishing
the pole hard right, the horrible
Furies surrounded,
angry face, the color tinted, all fire
war on.

- La Araucana and its relationship with Don Quixote -

previous record Cervantes connoisseur of English epic literature, keep it a great appreciation for the great epic poem of Ercilla. Well, now let's trace elements that our illustrious writer took this work to include in Don Quixote.

One of the most striking similarities between La Araucana and Don Quixote we can see the end of the second half and the beginning of the third La Araucana. Ercilla And it ended its famous second half with an inconclusive battle between two of the protagonists of the poem Araucanian warriors.

Guart, Rengo, coming down, save, save,
with great rigor and accelerated anger
the blow of the most graceful hand
never ruled barbara sword! More
who awaits the conclusion of this battle
forgive me if I destroncada
history here because I believe so
I expected a greater desire

At the beginning of the third part, published eleven years after the second, Ercilla apologized with a touch ironic for a long time have left their warriors with raised arm: let them fall here

undecided because seeing
arm raised high to Tucapel,
blame me, I
of punishment and reproved him so much time left;
but becoming the story and narration,
heard me screaming and angry Rengo
coming down on him the fiery sword by the gallant arm
governed.

sure this event has already sounded the hardcore readers of Don Quixote And in fact, Cervantes literary copied this when at the end of Chapter VIII of the first part left the Biscay and Don Quixote with his arms raised:

On, then, as has been said, Don Quixote against the wary Biscay with the sword held high, determined to open the middle and the Biscay also awaited him, raised his sword and aforrado your pillow ...

And later said

But it spoils all this, at this point and the end leaves the author of this story this battle, apologizing that he found more written about these achievements ... Finally

Cervantes again the story of the duel between the Biscay and Don Quixote in Chapter IX which in turn makes a clear nod to the work of La Araucana :

We made the last chapter of the brave Biscay and the famous Don Quixote uplifted swords, like one in two furious download fendientes, such that if full and fair . .. at that point as doubtful stopped and was so tasty destroncada history.

have been observed as well underlined in bold several words matching between La Araucana and Don Quixote , no doubt with the intention that readers familiar with the work of Ercilla give funny account of this travesty. What's more, and that is not strange to think that these chapters have been copied to La Araucana be starring a Biscay, and I remember that our Alonso de Ercilla was of Biscay, coincidence? I think not. Another coincidence

La Araucana and Don Quixote can be found in the beginning of Chapter XLIX of the second part of Don Quixote

say that the original itself reads this history would have it, Hamete writing this chapter, his interpreter translated it as he had written, was a way of complaint was the Moor himself, for taking in hand a story so dry and as limited as that of Don Quixote , because it seemed I always had to talk and Sancho, not daring extended to include other digressions and episodes more severe and more entertaining;

This preface Cervantes puts in the mouth of the complaint Hamete to write the true story without any type of disintegration, which, prevented development of alternative histories in the central narrative of the work. And is that this practice was nothing strange in the epic poetry of the time, in short it was again, as was well used in Don Quixote, to make a parody to the genre of the time.

Well, Ercilla already introduced in his preface to the second part of La Araucana a similar lament:

La Araucana not show that I work hard, two books still matter so rough and narrow range, because from the beginning to the end contains only same thing and have to walk forever by the rigor of truth and the path as deserted and barren, it seems to me like there will be no tired of following

Ercilla Thus conceived his work as historical, and obviously parodies the resource Cervantes, But we must remember that fact in the case of La Araucana , it was considered until the early nineteenth century, a valid historical text to see the early years of conquest.

However, it goes without saying that as a good poet Ercilla not respect what is said in the preface, it is well known in Canto XXVII, the description of the different regions of the world that the great magician plant names made their magic sphere.

And even in its third part, in Canto XXVI, apologizes for having Ercilla his adventures in Peru and have deviated from the main story with the following verses:

How I had fun and I'm haste first road diverted? Why so I forgot about the promise and speech Arauco started? want to go back to the left company if you have no taste and the ravaged; but I will try to say things apology that is worth being tasty.

for me is little more to tell, although there may be some other similarities between the two works, a server has not been able to find them Now, if I'd recommend reading all the more enjoyable and impressive work of Ercilla, because as I'm concerned, time has not enjoyed reading both of similar characteristics.
